"It Must Be Love" by Madness is my fav at the moment.
My favourite song (at the moment) is "Murder in the red barn" by Tom Waits.
You can nearly hear the creeking of the rocking chair as the mysterious and dark sounds form music like no other music.
Tom Waits' rusty voice is rough and the whole atmosphere reminds you of a 'film noir' setting in the woods. Deep down south (in America) somewhere.
He's not really singing. It's more like a rythmic story telling and the text is hauntingly beautiful:
"Roadkill has its seasons, just like anything. There's possoms in the autumn and there's farm cats in the spring. Murder in the red barn, a murder in the red barn."
Who's going to be blamed? The tramps? "They live beneath the bridge, one plays a violin and sleeps inside a fridge."
Karl?
"No one's asking Karl about the scar upon his face and the axe with blood stains in the barn. There's always some killing you've got to do around the farm."
A lady?
"There's nothing wrong with a lady drinking alone in a room."
You just keep asking questions, and answers only serve to make the whole mystery darker.
Two things are certain though.
There was a murder in that red barn.
And just like everything, roadkill has seasons.
The whole concept, the lack of "I love you" like lyrics, the odd music and the poetry make it my favourite song of the moment. And probably my favourite song ever.
Since 1992 my favorite song has been Alive by Pearl Jam.
In 1992 I was diagnosed with cancer. With all the trouble of trying to live with the idea I might die from the disease the song was released. Needless to say I did survive the disease and whenever I hear the song I keep repeating to myself "I am still alive!!!"
As a rock fan I also can listen to the fantastic guitar solo at the end of the song endlessly ...
