On Friday I sent feedback to request that a new rule be set in place whereby a user may only post on the public forums* after they have made 50 or 100 moves**.
Russ is considering it but is hesitant to do something like this as it is a big limitation.
*excluding the Help Forum
**this is a chess site, remember?
Start 2 games, make 50 moves per game - say 10 minutes work
Gives your spammer ability to post in forums after 15 minutes. Not exactly going to make much of a difference.

I doubt that this person has any friends.

I'd say that 50 moves by playing against one's own accounts could be achieved in 10 minutes, but I can't test it personally without being banned unless I used different IPs and I am not in the mood to mess around like that.

It wouldn't be failsafe, but it would at least slow them down.
Another thing I'd like to see implemented is a limit on the number of threads a person can create in one day. Also - slowing them down. They'd have to create more accounts and make more moves.
But it ultimately rests on the organisation of the moderators. It's ridiculous that there's this huge gap for hours where no mods are online. By my estimate I think we have about 9 mods, excluding Russ and Chris. They should have designated shifts.
Another thing about the move number threshold before posting is that it would slow other spammers too, not just CIV. CIV is not the only person who has ever done this, and there'll be more in the future too.
Originally posted by hopscotchjust put a time limit, even a day before getting posting privileges would slow them down considerably, force them to sleep the drunken idiocy off. 1 public thread a day for the first 30 days. max 10 posts a day.

sure you can go around all that, but you'd have to work your ass off.
come to think of it, playing 50 moves to get your first 1 single daily thread would work great too. a gigantic pain in the ass for one lousy thread, which can be deleted with one click anyway.

As a non-subscriber, it's hard for me to say this, but if you do put a limit on posts, it should only apply to people like me who don't pay to use the site. Think about it, with the case of CIV, he made a bunch of accounts that are all obviously non-subscription holders. And Further, since it would only apply to non-subs, i think your numbers need to be a little looser. how about 2 new threads per day with 25 posts total, which may be used on any thread of the subscriber's choosing. No rollover on posts or threads, meaning you can't save them from day to day, either they are usd or they aren't. The one fair stipulation I think should be in effect is that these restrictions only effect the General Forum. This is a Chess Site, so I see no reason to restrict the way someone can communicate their ideas about chess in the Chess Only Forum, or getting help in the Help Forum. the General Forum appears to me to be the only problem child, if you will. I'm just staying on topic with hopscotch's post, but this will probably all be moved to the site Ideas Forum.
