forgive me if this has been asked and answered before but ive noticed quite often in the different threads mentions of "skulls" and the "taking of skulls." so my question basically is this........ what are the skulls, how do they work etc. thanks.

If your opponent runs out of time, you get a skull symbol, and you can claim a timeout win by clicking it ('taking the skull'😉.

ok thanks for the quick response. a follow up question...... are timeouts a big problem here? one reason i stopped playing at another chess site is that 1/2 my wins (ok i only had 6 games total) were from timeouts.

against provisional players yes, against others not so much... especially the 1200p players (less than 5 games) abandon maybe half of their games. here today, gone tomorrow.

It hasn't been much of a problem for me, but most of my games are clan or tournament games. That means most people I play are subscribers, and most people wouldn't spend money on the subscription if they weren't committed to the site and therefore likely to play out the games. Of course many non-subscribers are just as likely to play out the games, but if you play people who are quite new to the site and haven't paid for a subscription, it's a lot more likely that they will leave without finishing their games.

We behead the guy, skin out his head. Then we give the brains to The Chess Zombie Clan. Then Metallica drinks beer from the skulls.

I've played almost 2000 games on this site, my profile welcomes P1200 new players, and my opportunities for taking skulls have been around 20 or 1%. It is a slightly larger problem for non-subscribers because they can tie up one of your six games, but my recommendation is to just resign slow games and start another, you'll get the points back in no time anyway and you get to play more chess and find more opponents to play at the pace you like.

A skull is the same as running out of time in a timed game.
