Marmite (brand name) is a thick, black, sticky yeast extract much like the Australian Vegemite. Strong tasting so needs to be spread thinly but delicious once you've acquired the taste. Excellent on whole wheat crackers with a slice of provolone and tomato. It's also vegetarian so it makes a useful addition to veggie cooking.
You're right on the cheese.

Marmite is quite salty. It goes rather well with blunt tasting vegetables. Marmite and cucumber sandwich (using whole-grain or brown bread with lots of seeds) is not bad and I like it. A nice way of consuming a by-product of beer fermentation.

Yes. Absolutely.

Although a few years ago I was well into frog legs in garlic butter. But they're just too difficult to get quite right.

If at first I don't succeed, try, try again.

I'm not a big fan of Marmite, but I do like vegemite. Vegemite is great on toast with butter and melted provolone cheese. A little vegemite in a meatloaf is also very tasty. Both would probably work just as well with marmite. Depends on your taste I guess.
