It's a lifetime membership thing. Apparently back in the early days you could pay a large sum to become a member forever instead of the annual subscription like it is now.
It's like being married to the site or something.
I prefer pay-as-you-go plans in case my attitude towards the site takes a downturn.
Originally posted by sbacatI thought it was for people that made a donation to the site before there were any form of subscriptions, and the life long subscription was introduced later as a reward for those people who helped keep the site funded in the early days.

Originally posted by Daemon SinSomething to do with the Knights Templar, I believe. The 33 secrets and the cube root of pi. Very hush hush. If you look closely you'll see the White Star members are sworn to never open with c4. Some say they will never die while others swear they are among the undead...

I believe the site was originally started as a hobby. As the membership grew, the original hardware became unable to "keep up". As I remember it, the first one or two upgrades were taken care of by site owners Russ and Chris, but it was becoming expensive for them and therefore the members made contributions to help them pay for upgrades. There was no particular amount specified. It was just whatever amount we were comfortable with giving to help keep the site going.
