In another short-lived thread, homedepotov posted the following, which I thought deserved a closer examination:

We are all in a trance state due to the hypnosis of social conditioning.

It made me think about my own life and routine, wondering if the things I do are by choice or by unthinking subservience to an unnamed dance.

For example, the religion people believe has an extremely high correlation with the religion of their parents. Yet there is geographical diversity.

A clear case of social conditioning driving key beliefs.

For a lot of folks, religion is just another accoutrement without much thinking involved at the onset or ever. However, I think most people do put some thought into what they're going to do with their lives: typically, we take the time to weigh our options before plunging into this or that field.

My thought along the trance-like existence train, is one of after the plunge is taken into our field of choice, don't we all begin to follow the steps without really thinking of how our lives are being spilled out?

So you think religious beliefs are immaterial for the way most folks live their lives?

That's a weird confession from a theist.

i like this concept of an unnamed dance. i imagine it as an interpretive number; a lone, bearded dancer in tights, isolated beneath the harsh glare of a single spotlight as he mimes existential angst and the eternal search for meaning and purpose.

I think you've hit it. As "thinking" animals we take info (right or wrong) in, make choices based on our best abilities and off we go.

Given that the majority of people are pretty clueless as to the tenets of their religion-o-choice--- let alone what those tenets actually translate to in practical application--- I'd say it's a pretty accurate assessment. The whole unexamined life quandary that befuddles man seems without boundary.

For those other folks apparently driven by voices, I don't know if that's their religion talking, or some latent guilt associated with what they perceive their religion is saying.

I feel mildly aroused, for some odd reason.

I think we are all doing the best we can with the level of knowledge and awareness we currently possess. One can only hope that our programming allows us to access and fully process those rare life-changing moments of insight and shift to higher and higher paradigms and so lead a life of lesser and lesser desperation. To not be so stuck in our habitual roles in the global tragicomedy of life is the name of the game.
