Why would it ever be free? How would that work?

Tax Bills are Free. I have never been charged to receive one.

TV is free so why not the internet? If they could find some kind or advertising that would make it free, that would be great.

Not in the UK, we have to pay a tax to own a TV

Andrew

That is not 100% true, you have to pay for the "licence" if you turn it on, not just own it.

Broadcast tv is not free in the US either. The advertisers pay for it. They pay for one reason and one reason only... so that they can have access to viewers and our oh so mushy, brainwashable craniums.

In the end, you pay. You pay in opportunity costs (all the lost minutes and hours of a finite lifetime wasted on ad copy) and you pay by walking around in a semi-hypnotic stupor induced by marketing hucksters and salesmen intent on creating perfect consumer zombies.

That's what you get for having Thatcher in power...as Rik said in the Young Ones TV show (which is free to view, if you choose)

"I hope you're satisfied, Mrs Thatcher!!"

"TV" isn't free-- network TV is. And can you think of a way cable internet could be supported by ad revenue in the same way that network TV is? I can't.
