I have Windows XP. This little gold shield with an ! in it appeared in the bottom right corner of my screen with some other icons. I double click it and it's Windows Update wanting to update stuff. I tell it ok and it's updating stuff, but it keeps saying FAILED!

Now...

SOME UPDATES COULD NOT BE INSTALLED.
The following updates were not installed.

Update for Outlook 2003 (KB943649)
Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB945185)
Security Update for Microsoft Works Suite 2005 (KB943973)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Word 2003 (KB950241)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (KB945432)
Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB947355)
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB953465)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2003 (KB943985) v2
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (KB953432)

Why aren't they installing?

The above updates are all for MS Office 2003. Also, MS has stopped selling XP, but they still continue to support it - until 2009 at least.

After that, you'll be on your own.
But with people still clamoring for XP where they can and MS forced to supply downgrade options on OEM installations of Vista, maybe they will bend the knee to customer pressure. Or not.
I'm going to try and bypass Vista completely if I can...

Anyway, ATY, I've never seen this problem, but maybe one of these troubleshooting steps will help you: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304498

It's likely because your download speed is too slow.

It's a huge update and if you're on dialup/highspeed lite and you are trying to download all of the updates in one shot, you are likely connected to their update page for too long, resulting in a timeout error.

Try downloading the smaller updates one at a time before tackling the big updates.

As Crowley hinted above,
if you don't have Office installed [or M$ Works Suite or whatever] you can't update it. Hence it will fail.
There would also be no point.

Not quite what I hinted at. I assume that Windows Update will only attempt to update software that is actually installed.
