Hi
Can anyone please tell me (assure me might be better !!) why Windows XP firewall never gives any alerts of blocked unauthorised entries. I used Zone alarm for ages, and often it would alert you when an attempt to enter your computer had been blocked, so why does Windows not do this ?? It might inspire more confidence that it is functioning 100% !!
I have tried Zone alarm, are there any other goo, free downloads that might be recommended ? Thanks 🙂

Windows Firewall is more geared towards blocking 'attempts to connect to your PC' than virus attacks. You'll probably only ever see it trying to block applications that need to connect to the internet (MSN, update programs, etc...).

If you want my advice, don't bother with any software firewall on your PC. They only slow things down and cause havoc with other programs. Get yourself a decent router with a firewall built into it instead. That way you'll stop any dangerous traffic before it gets near your machine.

WinXP Firewall is basically crap. If you have a router as mentioned above, it's worth leaving on as added protection, but if not I would get a 2 way [inbound and outbound] free firwall. XP is inbound only.

Kerio is a good one [IMO]
