Go here and follow the instructions for HijacKThis is your best bet.
It's a free computer help site where the people are very helpful and friendly.

note; you will need to register but it's all free.
You could also try AdAware and Spybot S & D first.

AdAware is here;

Spybot here;
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

These two free programs are worth getting either way.

I've tried to use Adaware to get rid of Winfixer, but it doesn't.

I switched to Firefox which seemed to take care of the problem, but everytime i use Explorer, the Winfixer pops up.

In that case I would say use the HijackThis program I mentioned. It is a well know b@stard to get rid of at times but the experts [in the link above] do it no problem.

Well, ff is a better choice of browser if you ask me, so I wouldn't feel bad about it. 🙂 Take the tabbing feature, for instance. Just Ctrl+T and you got yourself a new tab to surf in. Which brings back memories of another great browser. Opera.

Neither AdAware nor Spybot will remove it -- I have both!

Just turn off the "messenger" service in the Administrative tools and you'll never get that pop up.
Obviously you must turn it off everytime you use the pc.

Try spysweeper?

If the popup is on your registry what could it be doing even if you aren't running IE?

You need to use the HijackThis program to REMOVE Winfixer properly.
Download it, run it and post the resulting logfile to an online analysis site, there are plenty that will help you. [including the one I mentioned previously]
