-Removed-I thinking that the clue applaud relates to the word commemorate and that the four spymasters : M’s, which should have been 3, were in the word itself along with the ‘crt’ clue.
As I’ve always said, setting the clues can be just as hard as guessing the word. I’ve had a few of mine questioned

The " applaud" was meant to cover, in some way, both rate and commemorate.
The clues are themselves supposed to be cryptic, not just simple definitions. If only I hadn't made it unsolvable by getting the M count wrong.
