Broke N .. is the penniless bridge player (N for North). Put that together you have Broken = Busted.

On a side-note to the Bridge-related poser above, somehow decades ago at a garage sale I came into possession of a small black carrying-case for about a dozen sliders that each had four shuffled and pre-dealt hands -- somehow I think it was for some Bridge tournament in New York in 1924, but I don't remember why I think that.
