Probably because the word is tatterdemalion?
Unless clatterdemalion is a word - not come across it myself though. Sounds like it should be a word ... but no idea what the definition would be.

Thank you for reminding me about "tatterdemalion", but I'm sure I have seen "clatterdemalion" used somewhere.

Also, you seem to imply that every word should have a definition, which of course has left me feeling a little unmoored and perhaps rather negligent regarding my own use of language.
