I'm following the WC but couldn't find any explanation at the website as to how the groups work. Does just the group winner advance? Are the other three teams in each group then completely out of the tournament ?

First two advance. Each first team will play the second team from a group already selected in the draw.

first and second advance, the first plays against the second of an other group

I feel that the first 3 should advance, stretching the drag out for an extra 2 weeks!
