They also censor in France and Germany. E.g. The bbc (radio) reported Holocaust denial websites are filtered out of google.de results.
This probably has more to do with being compliant with the state constitution of Germany (i.e. no anti-Semitism or neo-Nazism tolerated) rather than the internal policies of Google, Yahoo, etc.

I don't think China is being done as a result of google internal policy (as infact they have been lobbying for freedom of search i China). The Chinese state is advising google what can and cannot appear in search results. I don't see where the difference is?

The difference is a communist government suppressing "dangerous" ideas like "freedom," "democracy," and “human rights,” vs. a democratic one that has repudiated its roles in WWII and the Holocaust, and doesn't want to give license to neo-Nazis and Islamo-fascists to spew on about how the Holocaust didn't happen or that we should burn all the Jews.

You see, it's like any revolution gone wrong--starts off all free love & information, then you get hooked on stuff and suddenly the top cadres are making love to foreign politicians. It takes a strong stomach to live in this world below.

No way I could boycott Google, it's just absolutely the best engine out there...

On a side note, if it wasn't for porn and Pamela Anderson, would the Internet be here today?

Google, Yahoo and other Western technology companies are falling all over themselves to gain access to the Chinese market and help keep the people oppressed there. It's wrong. Moreover, just because these American companies have gone global doesn't mean they should be allowed to give up their ethics. Indeed, we should all boycott these companies until they straighten up and fly right.
Keeping the people oppressed? If you take a hungry person to an all-you-can-eat buffet and take out the corn, are you starving them? No! You're bringing them more food than they had before. And, as someone else pointed out, Google's way includes them discovering that information is being withheld from them -- which would surely inspire their curiosity more than merely blocking the illegal sites. Someone will find a way around it.

By google refusing to let the Chinese use google think of all the information that would withheld. By filtering a few searches they still let most information through also I am sure people will get some information and a few will find ways to beak the system. Correct me if I am wrong but in a way our internet is filtered. Well I know (not that I ever would) if I started looking up child porn or making sites of it I could get in serous problems with the law.

To much freedom can be a bad thing suppose anyone is allowed to do anything I may live in constant fear, but if murder and assault are illegal(and therefore don’t exist) then I, along with most people will have a new freedom to go anywhere and fear much less.
