@Great-Big-Stees; Correct phonetics of the " night" it's written "NAIT"
There is a beauty in text and writing, using only phonetics would ruin it.

@Torunn; That's only because you're use to it,in phonetics spelling wards are eliminated therefore chilldren as soon as he learns the alphabet, they can read and write saving time and energy so they can concentrate to more important subjects.

Some Russian friends told me that they don't teach spelling in Russia because everything is spelled the way it sounds.

I think that is something that @Cosmic-Energy4 is talking about

Languages develop in different directions - kids choose the easy way when communicating on their cellphones. Cursive script (personal handwriting with letters joined) is disappearing too. It is what's happening, a way forward, although I believe we lose a lot.

Would it be easier perhaps to learn Russian? 🙂

I understand what you mean. I have studied phonetics in Swedish and English, and I have learned shorthand in the same languages. It's practical, quick, necessary in many situations. I think the use of grammar and spelling is rapidly changing.

Yes, that is correct: Russian is spelled just as phonetically as Spanish, for instance.

English really is the outlier, at least when it comes to languages descended from European languages.

(Psst -- it was two Greek monks who did that: Cyril and Methodius -- sorry to use the Latin spellings!)

On a tangent, it was the Jesuits who helped Vietnam come up with its phonetic writing system based on the modern Latin alphabet.
