I am bored and it's almost night time here, around 1:45 a.m. I think and I just wanna say that this site frickin' rocks. I mean, when I joined there were no tourneys, clans, messaging system, nice little task bars, different colored pawns, different sites, the forums were way different, and there were less people. Look what Russ and Chris have done to this site and just think about how much better it's going to get. Not to mention that we are soon gonna be able to play each other live with RHPL! Let's just take the time to give it up to them for being frickin' sweet, not to mention a double clap or something to Russ again, for QUITTING HIS JOB to work on this site full time. What a guy! I will be subscribing when I get the cash and I encourage anyone who hasn't done so to do so. Let's help him make the site better, eh? Thanks. *CLAP* *CHEER* WHOOOOOOOOOOOO RUSS AND CHRIS! WHOOOOOHOOOO!

Cripes, if programmers had egos, mine would be swelling to gangsta’ rapper style proportions.
As it is, I will sit here and quietly blush, then feel a little bit smug, if I may.
But the honest truth is, a web site like this isn’t great because of how good the technology is, and how feature laden it is, it is great because of the people who play here. Would anyone have seriously stuck around if they hadn’t formed friendships and relationships with the other people here? (Even the villainous characters who pop up now and again seem to gel the community further!) So I say, thank yourselves, old timers! Without you, the site would have been nothing, and I certainly would never have had the motivation to continue. If I can make this site work as a commercial venture, then I will be even more indebted to you all.
-Russ 🙂
I'm waiting for one of the originals like Rhymester or mwmiller or the like to stagger along and croak through a dewy eyed haze of misty nostalgia:
"Back in mah day at t'beginning of this chess place on interweb, we didnae have yellow fancy faces to put in t'forums, na di' we have no big community an' all, just a few of us ol' folks scratching round fer a game - none of this 'open invite' malarkey, ... when a rating of 1353 was good enough for a place in top 10, and photos in profiles weren't possible 'cos back then there were no such thing as profiles, and games were much harder in those days 'cos 'alf the rules weren't implemented. Those nice young fellows Russ n Chrismo changed all that see? Dem and dere new fangled ways and ideas. Ah well, t'only constant is change nowadays I'spose......*sigh*....*zzz....zzzz....zzzzz*"

But you're quite right. It has come a long way from what we originally had, and it just keeps getting better!

Back in December 2000, when I was even more of a fool than I am now, I started spending 10% of my net salary on a dedicated web server. I had little more to put on it than a few Young Ones quizzes and, like everyone else at the time, some pictures of my friends ( http://www.chrismo.com/about/friends.php ). Being a bit more sensible these days I would never dream of being so spendthrift. I was the only one who thought I wasn't mad. And I wasn't that sure.
One day, sat at work, my mate Tom joked that he was going to register the domain redhotpawn.com on which he was going to place a picture of a burning pawn. Just for a laugh.
About a week later I registered www.redhotpawn.com so I could use it as a home for Rival Chess ( http://www.redhotpawn.com/rival/ ). Oh, and to steal his idea about the fire thing.
At about this time, Russ, a semi-talented slob I met at University, was toying with the idea of creating a fun site for Web TV users. He had the idea for a correspondence chess site that would allow people casually to make moves from their armchairs during the commercial breaks of Casualty and Inspector Morse.
After some persuading, Russ agreed to use the redhotpawn.com name to host the site, although in reality I think he would have preferred to use his own domain of worldnetplay.com. He also agreed to stick the site on my waste-of-money server. At that time the thought of covering the costs by player-contributions was not considered - it was plenty too far fetched!!
Anyway, in the latter half of February 2001, the Red Hot Pawn website was launched...
And, as has been said already, wow... what a community has developed. Russ is 100% accurate when he says that every improvement to the site only comes because of the incentive of seeing people enjoying the site.
Unfortunately we have not kept any archives of how the site used to look. We never imagined it developing so much!
