Everyone expects web content/services to be free, just because of the old dot com boom days when no one cared about actually not covering their costs. But that was never sustainable, of course, and is now a distant memory, but unfortunately, people still expect services for free.

So, ...[text shortened]... have ads turned off. We do not want to do this, but it is a possibility in the future.

I understand the problem, but isn't almost everyone using some sort of adblocker? Maybe it should be mentioned somewhere that if you are using an adblocker, it would be appreciated if you would disable it for this site (I think that's possible with most adblockers), or something along those lines.

there is one pop-up that still gets through. It only happens when I'm on this site.

Actually, hands up, this time I am to blame. (some new ads in the rotation)

A pop up buster will kill them until I get rid of them.

But, just for the record, we do NOT condone using ad washers. If every non-sub starts doing that we have a real problem on our hands.

-Russ
what alot of other sites do is introduce a trial period for new non-subscribers, after which time, they must subscribe.

I don't think I know anyone that doesn't use a pop-up/ad blocker.

Why not just make the non-subs pay a reduced subscription fee (after a free trial period) if they can't afford £1.30 a month (the cost if they subscribe for a year)?

Say $10 a year (about 40p per month)

Actually, it's over £2.60 if they don't have cards.

The $59.90 is for two years subscription.

Edit: typo.

"We are unable to accept subscriptions via mail for less than the value of 2 years annual subscription. Payments in all currencies are accepted, but please use the correct exchage rate for $59.90 at the time the payment is posted."

I take this to mean the minimum time you can subscribe for is 2 years - hence the minimum charge of 2 years subscription, or am I missing something?
