Firstly, If Russ makes an announcement we should believe him. Secondly I am not good enough to comment on a game by a top RHP player. Maybe Bbarr has been playing one of the inner city kiddies
🙂
Well, I've always wondered this....
Should a GM necessarily be stronger than a top correspondence chess player. In an OTB environment, certainly, but surely the gap dimishes when time is much less an issue.
I've always thought that one of the main differences (their are others) that sets GM's and us mere mortals apart, is the speed in which they can thoroughly analyze positions, and calculate variations. Absolutely vital in OTB chess. When speed is not as big an issue, as on RHP, then shouldn't the gap close somewhat?

This is very interesting. I've met and competed against many grandmasters over the years, some pretty famous, such as Garry Kasparov, Tony Miles, Michael Adams, Nigel Short… The one thing they all had in common is they were not only incredibly good at chess, but extremely knowledgeable about it. I didn’t think it was possible for a grandmaster to play a ...[text shortened]... guy really is Yasser, then he must want an awful lot of people to believe he isn’t.
Dave
I hadn't seen any of the Yasser posts here until now, but the chess 'advice' he gave in an earlier thread is laughable.
It's not Yasser, and it's not April 1, so what's going on?

"My angst towards postal chess began when I read that many postal aficionados honestly felt that a postal World Champion would beat an over-the-board World Champion in a postal game. The postal caste never seemed to realize that their understanding of chess as a whole was so far below any over-the-board World Champion's as to make the argument virtually laughable.
Yes, postal players can use books and databases to their heart's content. And yes, they can stare at a move until their eyes fall out and their kitchen clocks break down and drop from the walls. All this, at its highest level, allows them to play the openings exceedingly well (though far below super GM level, of course), and it also lets them handle tactical situations superbly. Alas, their understanding of positional chess and the game's inner workings has always been, and will always be, lacking."
David,
You have my full vote ... I have myself played a few grandmaster's at simul tournaments and had the pleasure of actually playing a few at OTB tournaments earlier in my life ...
I also had training from an IM for about 2 years and despite him 'only' being an IM, he knew every single opening (at least by it's name)...
Furthermore, the game against bbarr is nothing more then a joke. Sure bbarr is a great player but a real grandmaster (leave alone a yasser) could play 10 bbarrs at a time and would still not likely to loose a game...
Russ, whoever this person is has fooled you big time and I'd double-check whatever evidence he has provided you...
Regards
Boris
I don't see that we have any other choice but to believe this guy is who he says he is, at least for now. Russ has done research that has clearly convinced him, and Seriawan has not been casuing any problems with his presence (asking for money etc). I do not want to kibitz on the game in question except to say that either Bennet is better than I thought or Seriawan is not as good as I thought. However, until he plays more games and/or begins asking us or Russ for money, we need to just go along. We all risk looking like big jerks if he turns out to be who he says he is and we all chased him away.
Furthermore, if he really does get a bunch of accounts for kids in the Seatttle area and we all get a chance to interact with them and help them with their game...quite frankly I don't care what he wants to be called.

In one of the initial threads on the subject, I said that games will show. His game against Bbarr shows enough for me... I don't believe that he is GM Seirawan, even after Russ post.

Originally posted by The Slow PawnSay, for the sake of argument, you are correct. Who cares? If he really wants to help out a bunch of kids by getting them accounts and maybe offer some lousy chess advice...more power to him.

We have nothing to lose by believing him. Also, we will look like bigger fools if we don't believe him and turn out to be wrong than if we do believe him and turn out to be wrong.
Unless I'm mistaken you have a spot open on Metallica, yes? 😉
