to spend on my new desktop computer ... What do you buy (in my position)
I've already got the following components
1x external HP DVD-Writer (Firewire and USB ports)
1x external USB floppy drive
1x external 180GB Lace Big Disk (Firewire only)
1x external 250GB Lace Big Disk (Firewire only)
1x Dolby Surround system
1x Internet modem
1x Windows XP Professional (Corporate version)
In addition, I will buy a 19inch flat screen extra (or 17inch if the 19inch is too dear)
I want a desktop with
- 80-200GB internal HDD
- Pentium 4 processor (or equivalent, don't need the latest thing, cheap will do here)
- 128MB (or higher) graphics card (I like gaming, but don't play any of the latest games, so cheap will do here as well)
- A soundcard that supports 5.1 dolby surround sound (no compromise, I want to use my surround system)
- A case (will be well hidden, so no fancy extras, cheap cheap cheap
- Powersupply
- Motherboard
- 512MB Ram (or more, depending on how high the bill is already)
- Anything I forgot to list
Basically, I'd like to use all my external components (if possible) so am hoping to NOT buy a DVD or floppy drive... Any 'complete' solutions you could recommend ?
Thanks heaps
Boris
PS: Once I've all the part I can build the damn thing without a problem, but am never sure what goes with what

I certianly hope all of your components come from socialist countries. Sorry, so pentiums for you, Boris. 🙂
And I still drink diet coke !!!
Just because I compare Bush with Hitler doesn't mean I hold a grudge against Americans (only those who voted Bush) ...

PS: Bought a new system - Thanks Robbo, who (over the phone) helped me a great deal finding a cheap, yet powerful new toy to play with :-)
Originally posted by collemanI've just ordered from Mesh as well - I bought my first ever computer from them and have had no complaints - their customer service is a tad impersonal though and once one of their reps hung up on me...
I have just ordered from www.meshcomputers.com where you can build your own by selecting whatever components you want.
Worth a look if only for ideas.
Be warned however its easy to get carried away!
🙂
another place i've heard great reports from regarding price and quality is http://www.watford.co.uk, but i can't comment firsthand.
it has to be said there are three very good reasons why i'm buying a new computer - doom 3, farcry, and half-life 2 🙂
