Holy Crap!! Sad to say it guys..but this isn't the case. I have
hobnobbed with alot of GM's...and shared some ideas and learned
from them..especially after I turned 21 and could catch them at the
bar after a round. Man...you buy a GM a beer and set up a
board...they will show you all you want to see under those conditions.
I told Tony however how I used to grab them at tourneys when I was
younger.
We would lay in wait with a position set up from one of the GM's
games and when he would walk by I would say "Mr. Yermolinsky...we
were trying to figure out this and none of us can quite understand
it...can you spare a second and help us." Of course it being one of his
games he said sure and proceeded through variations and
thoughts...maybe only five minutes of his time but it was a thrill.
I must have pulled that little coup at least 50 times...and it always
works. But the bar thing you get more. Me being a "Schliemann" man
I had an IM from Hungary show me the intracacies of the Cordel
defense...it was amazing and only cost me a few beers
But I never had a private teacher...only my books and practical play.
Dave
Dave, I admire your tenacity. I love chess, am somewhat addicted in
fact, but I don't possess the drive/vigor that you seem to have. I
suspect I will plateau somewhere when I discover diminishing returns
on my study. As it is I don't read very much and will only on rare
occasion look at some of my lost games to see what went wrong.
You're a bright star in the chess world...even if you're "ONLY" a
national master🙂. And I will certainly read your book, if in fact you
are writing one. Speaking of which, let me know when you are in the
editing/ getting an agent phase. My wife is going through that now
and I may be of some help to you.
