What do you think is the greatest thing you've ever done for someone else in your life? (preferably someone not in your immediate family, since good deeds there are kind of expected...)
I think mine is when I was in high school and we were picking partners for something in gym, and in that class I always hung out with these two buds of mine. Well on this day I noticed this kid who was like a shy, nervous, nerdy little wreck, and well yeah you see it coming, while everyone else paired up I found it in me somewhere and asked this kid if he wanted to be my partner, I think it was for like one-on-one basketball or something. My two buds in that class kept asking me if I just wanted to go with them and all the "What the hell is wrong with you?" schtick, but I just didn't care that day. During that day I was as social and friendly with the kid as possible, getting to know his whole story and making him laugh and yada yada. It sounds like it was out of pity, and at first yeah sure it sort of was, but I eventually started to really like the kid and I had a pretty good time that day.
The fun part is that now, three or four years later, that kid is currently pursuing a relationship with this girl who I just ended a 3-year friendship/almost-relationship with, and at the same time pretending to not even know my name, even though we spoke almost every day in gym that year after that one incident. Oh, the world. How it spins.

My friend and I were out in choppy water, but we were in a 26' deep hulled vessel, so we could ride the waves all day. About a mile out from shore I saw for a brief moment, what looked like a sail, then it disappeared. Waves were running about 6-8' this day, so for a mast to disappear seemed rather unusual.
We turned the boat into the waves and started making out way to where I thought they'd be. After about 15 minutes we found the capsized boat with Mom, Dad and 2 kids in the water. No lifejackets on any of them, and the waves kept washing them off the keel into the very cold water.
We radioed for help, and said we were bringing them in, and for medical assistance to meet us at the marina. We managed to get them on board, but dad wanted us to tow his pride and joy in with us. Some people are just so stupid its beyond belief. We didn't, as we'd probably all be dead if we tried to. Got to shore and the ambulance was there, as were the police.
Everyone was safe, we were soaked, but hell we were young, and in good shape. To make a long story short, Dad was mad at us for leaving his boat, so none of them ever thanked us. Oh well, he's out $80,000, his family is safe and he can hate my friend and I until he dies...LOL

Several years ago, I went to a bank to cash a relatively small check (about $36). I went through the drive-through and used the little tube thing they had at the bank. Anyway, I completed the transaction and drove away with my little envelope of money. When I got home, I opened the envelope only to discover that they'd given me $360 instead of $36. At first I thought, "hey cool...free money!" Then, I remembered the bank teller in the window who handled the transaction. I was worried that she might lose her job over the whole thing. I had been a bank teller in college, so I had some sympathy for her. So, I ended up going back to the bank and returning the money.
About a week later, I received a nice note in the mail from the teller, with all the details of the event and a big "thank you" for my honesty.
The following week, I called in sick to work one day. My girlfriend at the time stupidly punched my timecard on her way out that day, giving me credit for a day when I didn't work. I had no idea she'd done this. This was my first "real" job out of college and I was making crap money, but it still meant a lot to me and I wanted to do well. The following week, I was called into the administrator's office to dicuss my paycheck. I had no idea what was going on. It wasn't until that moment that I realized what had happened--my girlfriend had punched my timecard.
It looked like I was going to be fired, or at least severely disciplined. I was dimissed for the day. I went home and thought about it a bit, pissed off at my girlfriend for her stupidity. Then, I thought about the note I'd recieved from the bank. I grabbed the note and drove back to work. I went in to the administrator's office and showed her the note. Then I asked her why she thought I'd try to cheat them out of $100 (or whatever my daily wage was), when I'd obviously passed up a much bigger score a couple of weeks earlier. I saw she was sort of softening up, so I said a couple more things and then wrapped it up. Anyway, she let me off with a warning and let me return to work that day.
Long story, but I guess it shows that it sometimes pays to do the right thing.
