okay, i have to tell someone this, last night my car was broken so i asked my sister to drop me off at my mates house, so while we we driving, we drove straight past a hit and run. . .we saw a man lying on the side of the road. . .i told my sister to stop, she tried to stop other cars to help but they just drove away quickly, i ran up to the man, who looked in terrible aggony, a secruity car was parked on the side doing nothing about it, i was in complete shock the injured man had broken his leg, the bone was sticking out his bottom part of his leg, with the rest of it hanging by little bits of skin, i i threw my jacket over him, cause he was really cold, and so quiet! i asked him wat his name was, and he looked at me and just broke out into tears saying sorry, sorry, sorry. i felt so helpless with other by-standers just watching me in a panic!!! i called the ambulence and proceeded to keep him warm, i couldnt stop looking at his leg, wondering wat i could do, i've always seen this on t.v, buts its nothing like the real thing, i mean his bone was sticking out and full of blood, i really didnt know what to do, i asked him his name and he said george, i then asked him to stick his tongue out, to check how much blood he had lost, then after about 10mins the ambulence arrived and help him out, i explained to them the situation, and took his hand and i said that god with him now and he will be alright, i went back into the car, my sister was in tears, she said i did the right thing and we drove back home, i couldnt sleep the whole night, last night just thinking about it!!!! i just learn so much in 15mins, i really felt good that i did the best i could, but the shear reality of it all will scare my life forever!!!!!!!

Good job dom . I had almost the same experience years ago . Without all of the details , I was trying to calm a girl down who had head/neck injuries to keep her from injuring herself more . It was outside a bowling alley , a huge crowd gathered , but it was like living a nightmare as no one would help . My 1st wife was waiting in the car for me when it was all done . She not only refused to help , she yelled at me for getting involved and getting blood on my clothes . (A HUGE fight came out of that one). I think my greatest frustration was never finding out what happened to that girl . The fire-fighters , police , ambulance service , none were allowed to give me details and there was nothing in the paper (too small an event in a metro area .)
You did fabulous though , Hat's off to you !

You did good, Dom. You did what you could to help. You may not have known everything to do, but you did your best. That's a hell of a lot better than those other insensitive bastards!

You did well, Dom. Bravo.

I would ask you and anyone else reading this thread to contact your local American Red Cross (or similar agency if outside the U.S.) and take a course in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resusitation) and basic First Aid. I am an instructor for the ARC and I can tell you with certainty that the skills you learn can save a life and give you confidence to respond correctly and efficiently until professional help arrives if the need arises. The skills are not difficult to learn. You never know when you may need those same skills to save a loved one.

Obviously not the best way to learn so much, but good job. Why other people don't get involved is a complete and utter mystery.

I'm not excusing people for this phenomena. Please don't get me wrong. Generally people do umm and ahh in these situations, they think and expect that the situation will be dealt with by someone else. People in this generation tend to expect an easy deal and if any situation like this arrises then they are totally bamboozled(sp.),
Three years ago i saw a man having a fit on a park bench in Bournemouth. I just stood ther and froze. Something inside was telling me to do something but in my head i did not know what to do. Another person came running up to me and said' WELL DO SOMETHING THEN!!!'. I said ' I would but i don't have a clue what to do'. I phoned an ambulance and by then some one else had taken hold of this guy and secured his head to stop him from banging it. I was taught in cub scouts to do this but lack of experience and putting this into practice somehow made me not follow this instruction through.

I think that this should be on the national curriculum in every country. Not just this incident, but how to be useful and dynamic in these situations and how to take control. People have a tendency to think 'Oh i can't deal with that, someone else can do it'.
