Because we don't want the kind of drivel that spammers produce. Read some of the great discussion that takes place here. Participate in it; you appear quite capable. Then compare it to spam. Also, the "Longest Thread in RHP History" is the equivalent of a spam repository, and fulfills the purpose of a chat room.

Could RHP have a chat room?
People are constintaly reminding all the 'spammers' that the forums are not chat rooms- so why don't we just have a chat room?

Not so sure it was solely (if at all) a bandwidth issue that led to the chat room's demise.
RHP Live has a real time chat facility, but only between you and your opponent rather than a whole room.

I think the common practice was to stay logged onto RHP to play games, and be in the chat room at the same time.
We had an exclusive room that could only be accessed by RHP members (and the people who ran the chatroom server).
As I remember the real problem, it was that several RHP members were unwilling to comply with the rules that were being enforced by the people who controlled the chat room, which eventually led to the chat room being shut down.

The chat room thing just never took off. It was hosted externally - and one day they just switched it off. I didn't even notice, and no one brought it to my attention, which is the surest sign that no one cared about it too much.
When I leave work, I have plans to move this site forward, as you all know, but I also may develop a more commercial (not chess related) site. This will require the purchase of some chat software, which I may reuse here at a later date if it is successful.
So it may return at some point.
