    Well thanks anyway, I printed out the link, it is dense with information
    and hadn't read the whole thing to get particulars.
    One interesting thing about it is the date of invention being the
    19th century. Interesting juxtaposition of technology two centuries
    separated, using a concept from so long ago with modern updates.
    My question then becomes, what reason did they have to use
    that notation in the first place? I guess so they would not have
    to actually draw a chessboard. There were chess stamps available
    even then to be able to fairly quickly make a position, couse if you
    goofed, you had to start over....

    A backup for correspondance games? You could send an FEN and a standard algebraic notation move.
