Invite a friend????

I created a new game and put a friend's email adress in the box which says (player's name,a friend's adress or leave blank for open invite).Now I have a game against 'unknown'.I didn't get a message saying that my friend will receive the challenge.Will he?Is this how it is done these days?I couldn't find 'invite a friend' anywhere as it used to be.....
