You need to subscribe to play in a tournament. Go to Open Invites and offer or accept a game there. It's a good place to start.

It only last for first 3 moves then it goes away, That gives you time to make sure you want to play the game. If you do not like your opponent or the time controls then click the trash can and the game is removed. There is no gain, loss, of points.
