locked messages

Recently messages have been coming in to my in box with little key symbols next to them. They appear to be locked and I can't read them. They are messages that other people have sent to me, I don't understand why they would be locked. Does anybody have any idea why that would be?

I think you have too many messages in your inbox.

Ah, yes, I see it now. I guess it would help to read the legend at the bottom of the inbox. Many thanks.
