Although after receiving these few I went into my site settings and changed the box (inadvertently as it turns out to allow them). As a result I have recieved one today. But I'm positive I'd originally disabled them, and for a few days didn't get any from one or two individuals who who sent out as many as they could.

Maybe your opponents already had the option to send the reminders before you turned this off but they only made use of it afterwards when the sign was still there. (Russ probably wouldn't delete anything on your opponents My Game Pages - too much trouble for few incidents as you are likely to move the same day as you change the settings).
In this case the opponents won't be able to do so ON THE NEXT MOVE because the option will no longer be available to them now.

Does the sign disappear if your opponent has disabled the move reminders? I thought they just wouldn't be sent. Anyway, in my case I got them a long time after I had disabled them, in games in which I had certainly moved since then.
