is there a limit, on open challenges? I seem to be only able to do ten at a time.

I think a 10 per person limit is enough. Try looking at the player tables, and challenging people around your rating, with a same move frequency.

Or joining a clan is an excellent way to get an ideal amount of games against people with your same rating.
