Membership continued to grow and this eventually overloaded the equipment and upgrading put a financial burden on the owners, Russ and Chrismo. Numerous members made voluntary contributions to keep the site going and to help pay expenses. Those who made contributions were awarded a pawn star icon which appeared by their username.
When the subscription program was established, these original contributors became known as original pawn stars.
