If you play a game against an opponent who is rated much higher than you and get beat (of course) but play a strong game and make a credible showing, does that improve your ranking, drop it, or have no effect at all?
Unfortunately, the qualitative play doesn't appear to have much bearing on these scorings. It is purely a mathematical calculation on win, lose, or draw.
