Are you using MSIE?

Go into the internet options, and DESELECT "Show Friendly error messages".

Microsoft, in their wisdom, decided that if an error message wasn't long enough (I think 512 bytes is/was the threshold) they'd withhold it from the user and display an arbitrary error of their own.
