when i use copy and paste of a function, i want some variables to refer to the cell to the left - this is easy/automatic.
i also want some variables to always refer to a particular cell.
i used to know how to do this and have forgotten!

Look for "absolute cell reference" in the Excel help. Refer to the fixed-position cell using dollar signs: $A$1
