I've just recently joined this excellent chess site, and only one thing triggers me.

The site default mails every move to the user! UGH!

Not only does it create hosts of usually unneeded traffic, and requires a stable SMTP gateway for the site, but it can also be incredibly tiresome to get 3-4 days delayed mail.

My advice to you admin guys, disable this feature by default, and let people enable it IF NEED BE.

It'll save you bandwidth, an SMTP gateway and frustrated users scavenging your site for the disable function!

Cheers and merry Christmas

You can disable that function on your own by going to: My Settings-My Site Settings, and unchecking the appropriate box.

I know!

My point is, to save bandwidth and conserve power on the servers hosting this great site, it would be much wiser to disable the mailing options by default, rather than enabling them by default...

I'm quite certain a lot of the new people here don't use it, and first starting looking for the disable option when they have 50+ mails in their inbox 🙂

Wasted bandwidth and power..

yes guys, but U have to see the other side of teh medal, too: You are new to the site, you don't have any idea of mailcorresondence chess and you move every three days: if you don't get mails you will forget about RHP very fast. :'(

I don't get your point. To me that argument sounds like an excuse to spam people?!?!?

I could udnerstand it if people who only visit with large intervals need the feature to keep posted on their games, but in that case, I would suggest those people ENABLE the mailing part because they really need it, instead of enabling the feature bt default...

RHP mail is NOT SPAM 😲

and I just said it for prople who are NEW here! they never changed the default setting. I (old member) know all (or nearly all) RHP-features (eg site settings). We just don't want to loose these new mebers...
got my point?

So you're hooking people up and pulling them in with what I find to be pro forma spam?

You already have the reminder feature, that way people can dump newbies (or others) a reminder that they have a game going, and thus you can keep newbie's hooked...

So to me, the default mailing of moves is still excessive... even if you wanna to use it for keeping newbies on a leash.

Flixotide,

A lot of people play very casually - they rely on the notification email to trigger any site activity.

Now it might be the fault of the RHP interface, but many people just do not discover all of the options available on this site. (I know, I answer a lot of feedback...) Most certainly would be very unlikely to turn ON the notification. As it is, we send the email - and can provide instructions on how to turn them off.

-Russ

BTW : I think calling the email 'Spam' is a bit harsh. 🙂 We clearly state that we send move notifications on the home page. And they are hardly packed with adverts.

I could come up with a few suggestions. How about passing on the basic functions in an introduction with the registration email? Just 5 basics.

- Here you can do this
- Here you can do that
- This option could be handy
- Remember to check this
- Read more here...

Sorry if I seem a bit harsh on the issue.. being soft isn't always my style, and I truly believe that a few things here could use a little tweak for things to run better.

Take it as a compliment, I care 🙂
