I'm new so ... anyways, it's easy to congratulate someone when you resign, just message before hitting resign, but how to thank someone for a good game when you win? Or am I missing something?

That can only be done by private message,unless you say it when you mate him/her.

The situation you describe has been discussed before, but as far as I know the only thing the winner can do when someone resigns is to send a private message to the person who resigned.
