After you move the pawn to the 8th rank you are given the option of promoting to a rook,knight, bishop or queen.

When you move your pawn to the final rank you will be able to select a queen only after you have submitted your move. Meaning when you press "submit move" the pawn will still be a pawn. After that you may choose either a queen, rook, knight, or bishop.

Your opponent must have wanted a knight.
