Acrolein is something you smell at very low concentartions. In some cases it is made by the yeast which make the alcohol, if that happens, don't distill, the smell and taste will be in the Schnaps.

Alexei Sayle once described a Snowball (drink made from Advocaat) as like a cup of phlegm with an umbrella in it which made sense to me. Probably not the same as egg nog but it's a difficult starting point for me.
