A chess cartoon from an Archie comic depicting chess players as geeks.
Then yet another picture of me for your collection to prove that we are not.

A couple of positions to be solved.

Black to play and win and this next one is by Steinitz in 1862.

Not sure what it's like in Europe, but America has always showcased chess team players as the most nerdish, socially awkward people in any group. Sorry to say this about my country, but intellect is not held in high esteem here. If you've ever watched YouTube film reviews of the Queens Gambit, nearly all the American reviewers say things like "I don't know the 1st thing about chess" as if that were a badge of honor. 😕

That's a nice chess set next to you in the photo. Yours?

HI venda

I try to, like a convoy captain, look after my slowest ship and keep it basic, sometimes
I'd like to go deeper for the players who know a bit more for that the average Home
and Casual player. But they are the bulk of the players here. There are plenty of other
sites where players 2000+ can go to get help or inspiration.

My lot, and I do consider them as 'my lot' are enjoying themselves,
I sometimes wish I could remember when I just shrugged off a clumsy loss.
Maybe to enjoy the game better we should not try to get better at it. 😉

Hi McChill,
I do have a couple of good wooden sets but analyse on and permanently set up is
of a standard plastic set with a roll up green and white board. The picture was taken
at the Edinburgh Chess Club.

One of those pins is what I know as the Cambridge Springs trap.

Nikita Vitiugov - Santos Latasa, Leon 2023 is quite a combination considering he played Nf3+ in a 20 minute game.

Why is the tournament called AdvancedchessLeon? Isn't advanced chess a human plus box combo?

I've also seen "relative pin," as a synonym for "sham pin."

Hi David,

'Relative |Pin' is the correct official term and I have used that is the past but many
years ago I started using 'Sham Pin' or 'Tactical Pin' when I discovered students
were thinking any pinned piece was dead wood and could never move and
were missing a few unpinning combinations.

Hi Geoff,
I see. Good idea!
