I saw in the post about the coming cheat police where someone was
saying it was cheating to use books and computers. But in
corospondence chess (sp?) books are allowed and thats basically
what this site is, CC. Computers of course just play the game for you
but books? We are all here trying to get better and don't see any
problem with opening books. The middle game and end game books
would not help much because they are position specific and it would
be unlikely a given game would match the positions in these books
but opening books run out after about 14 moves so then you are on
your own anyway. So who else thinks its cheating to look up openings?

I've played a few games very far into database, but that's part of the game. There's no rule saying that you can't use them past move 15. It's unfortunate that some games are played entirely within database, but it's something that we can't do anything about.
In the first season of the clan leagues I played a sicilian against CeeWinM that never left the database. 37 moves and everyone of them is a previously played move from history. I thought at the time, and still do, that a draw against him was good enough.

database to follow or did you work it out as you went? Seems very
small chance you could have worked it out all the way to the perpet.
I use the books once in a while. really when I just want to try a differnent opening. sometimes i forget some of the moves in a specific opening and need to check. most of the time i just start my games a w/o any books, but they do come in handy occasionally. not that anyone around here plays anything other than the GD Ruy Lopez so most of the time i dont need to check anything.
Originally posted by sonhouseWell I'm sure that that sicilian variation has been played many times. Up to move 14 we were in very established databse history of these games. It was move 15 that changed it all really. White's Queen e3 is what took us to a different game altogether.

There was a computer match game played in 1994 between m chess pro and hiarcs that chose this line. Black (hiarcs) won that game after 63 moves.
Two drawn games from database:
Vorobiov,E-Gurevich,Vl 2004 draw from the cappalle la grande in france.
Millan,M -Gelaberto,E 1993 a correspondence game. This is the line that the game eventually followed.
White's move 17 Queen d4 took us out of the line where black won. In the computer match the move was 17 white queen e2. On move 19 in the first drawn game I listed they opted for Bishop takes f6. But my opponent chose the line that had 19 Knights takes g7. On move 20 Queen c5 I offerred the queen trade just as they had done in the databse game, but my opponent declined and took the rook, of course. It was this move that you would say led me to follow this line to it's draw conclusion.
CeeWinM is a strong player, and I have was happy to walk out with a draw. This was in a 1/7 game so we did'nt have the luxury of sitting around studying the game for better lines.
