actually this is a simpler version of a more complicated puzzle
white to play and win

(yes all i did was move the king over one but it makes a big difference)

HINT:the following is the fen notation of the position after 1 move by each side
1k1K4/1p6/pP6/8/8/8/7P/8

1.b6+ Kb8! 2.h4 a5 3.h5 a4 4.h6 a3 5.h7 a2 6.h8Q a1Q
Made possible by Black's 1st move.
7.Qg8!
Not 7.Qe8? Qg7!, or 7.Qxa1?, stalemate.
7...Qa2
The only way of stopping the discovered check.
8.Qe8 Qa4 9.Qe5+ Ka8 10.Qh8!
Renews the back-rank battery, now that Black's stalemate trick is gone.

this is indeed correct but can you provide an explanation for your moves, and a continuation after 10...Qf4

I've already explained the moves.

10...Qf4 is refuted by 11.Qa1+.
