1-to finish in top 5 in some important tournament for me(and from this to get a good ELO~2050)
2-to finish the current book(Silman's Workbook) and read 5 more books (in this order: Vukovic: Art of Attack in chess; Dvoresky's: Endgames Manual; Kotov: Think like a GM; D Marovic: Understanding Pawn Play in Chess; Kotov: Play like a GM)
3-to learn and play a new opening as black(I know somehow only KID and French now)
4-to get a win in a long OTB chess game against an FM (I have only 2 draws against them in long games until now)
I usually have a well-defined measurable goal as a New Years resolution.
Just "be better in chess" is not good enough.
Then I want to have a realistic chance of actually getting there.
Getting 1800 in rating is not a good idea.
So, this is my resolution for year of 2008:
Going through a chess book, play every game in it, and read all comments. This means about one (or two) game a week, about one chapter a month.
Yes, I've picked a chess book but that's a secret which one I chosed.
With this kind of resolution I will be better in chess. (How much? No idea.).
I will also get a higher rating when the year is over. (To what level? No idea.)
But do I really know for sure that my higher rating at the end of the year has to do with me studying a book?
No, so the only resolution I hve is to study this book, nothing else. The result is to come later and is not a goal for itself.

How about play less and study and analyse more? Too late for me though as a new year's resolution as I have just started doing that. Previously it was about 90% play, 10% analysis and 0% study. Recently I have switched to about 60% study, 25% play and 15% analysis
