Worse than the Scandinavian as White has the KKt developed in turn for Black's pawn c5, which only stops Black's queen from reaching the square a5 afer ex Qx Nc3

It's easy to determine if a line is good or bad. All you have to do is look at the GM games and see if anyone's playing it! If no top grandmasters are playing the line then it's a loser.

I've always had a hunch that the Scandinavian is a good defense, and I also have an inkling that this hunch is wrong, but I thought, well... ok. it's bad.

2. f4 d5

and I believe black has some compensation for the akward c pawn. I would only play it against the gran prix attack though, and not the open sicillian.

There is nothing wrong with the Scandinavian Defence, it's ver solid but it tends to suck all the life out of the game. Black just sits back with c6, e6, Nd7, Nf6, Bf5, Bb4xNc3, 0-0-0, Qc7 and doubles rooks on the d file. I used to play the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit against the Scandinavian, but even that isn't good enough to tear properly into Black.

So I switched to the English, and now I determine where the game goes. 😏
