a6 and then f4 were moves I would not choose. I would want to develop a piece before moving those pawns...

I'd start with the two moves before. The Philidor is not a good choice unless you know why you're playing it, and the classic f5 thrust is known to be inferior, maugre André-Danican's own opinion of it. Moreover, both of those also go counter to your correct suggestion of developing pieces.

[voice=Adam Savage] Well, there's your problem! [/voice]

So, why did you choose 2. ...d6, then?

Richard

Just a personal view, but if an opponent plays e4 I will suspect that they will have a preferred opening in response to e5. I would recommend, c5, d5 or e6 as alternatives as the opponent may not be as comfortable. Have a look on the chess websites or youtube and look at one opening response to e4 in particular (Najdorf, Dragon, Scandinavian etc.) and spend a month or so only playing that opening. You will quickly learn the strengths and weaknesses. I find the Philador quite restrictive, but that may suit your style of play. If you like your opening at the moment, then google "Philador" and see what the GM's think are it's strengths and weaknesses. It can only help your understanding of what is going on on the board

I guess what I am saying is experiment a little, the worst that could happen is that you might lose a few games 🙂

I'm willing to bet that a vast majority of players these days expect c5 more than they do e5. When I was an e4 player, I just played the Scotch, and I think I got to use it in 1 out of 14 games as white. I saw the Dragon, Hyper-excellerated Dragon, and Najdorf variations a lot more than I saw e5.

Allowing your queen to be taken forcing to move your king was your first mistake... the second was not taking the bishop after he took yours, i didn't look after that.

Castle early. Check the safety of the piece you're moving, twice and take pieces when you're given the chance.

...and watch out for the pawns. Remember, one of them might become a Queen one day. They're not just cannon fodder 😵

You're probably right Thabtos, which is why my preference is d5 😉
