I'm convinced one of the biggest roadblocks to a players growth is inconsistency. Some play many games, but don't study much. Others study a lot, but play few competitive games. Balancing one's study of tactics, openings, engames etc. with a consistent (but not overwelming)
game load is one of the keys to gains in playing strength and ratings.
One of the best ways of doing this is using a written schedule. You can schedule 1-2 days off each week, as well as a yearly vacation, but when your schedule says you are supposed to study, be steadfast and do it, likewise with your competitive game anaylsis. This may be old news to some here at RHP, but I'm convinced many players have little balance in there efforts. I started using this system 3 months ago, and my rating is up over 175 points...and still climbing. 😏
