What a good thread. I enjoyed it a lot. Will be purchasing a few books now. 🙂 Keep this sort of thing going, even if you are pasty and like to sip tea and talk about the weather. heh

Here is one of my better games using the English.

Game ID = 152612

(Sorry Bob, I hated to publish the one time I've beaten you but it was a really good game.)

I'll look for others as well.

OK so I see the opening now... but did Bobla play the correct response to it? Is E5 the recognised response to the initial C4?

There are 2 main responses to c4. e5 and c5. I enjoy playing against e5 as it is a type of Sicilian reversed where white has an extra tempo and it can be very dangerous for black.

The standard 2nd move for white is Nc3 but I like to play 2.g3 and then 3.Bg2. It's an advanced fianchetto variation recommended by GM Tony Kosten in his book 'Dynamic English'.

I plan on taking a peek at it Tony. I'll try tonight, I've just been pretty busy lately. 😀

It's pretty good......resembles the Botvinnik system if I remember it correctly!

I've had some success with the Botvinnik system although it can be a little awkward.

Against 1.c4 I often play 1..e6 trying to transpose to Queen's Gambit Declined. Of course White isn't forced to 2.d4, but he'll have to d4 sooner or later or I get to control the centre. Do you consider this as a sound approach?

It's good although even though white has to push d4 sometimes black gets saddled with an isolani.....

What book are you referring to?

One day I'm going to go for 1...f5 in response to 1.c5. I have no idea if this is sound or not but it looks quite interesting.

In a kind of similar hope to Rabella, against 1.c4 I like to play 1....c6 with of view of transposing to the Slav.

A dutch system is perfectly fine against c4 but not as good as against d4 as white can play d3 and then d4!
