Chess newbie here and wondering a few things about Grandmaster matches. Having never seen one I am wondering:

1. Are the players allowed to take notes during the game or must it all get done in the brain? And if yes, do most Grandmasters keep notes?

2. Can a player stand up or walk around to see the board from a different POV?

3. What's the rule on touching a piece? Must it be played if touched?

That's about it. Thanks.

Where would they be able to write notes? All they have at the table is their game record sheet.

No notes, except that they are required to record the moves.

Yes, they may get up, watch other games, refill their tea (sometimes waiters assist), and use the loo.

If they touch a piece, they move it (or capture, as the case may be).

i believe once petrosian playing fischer walked around the board and kept peeking over bobbys shoulder. he then yelled for the director. i think that wouldve been a fun championship match to see.

1. No notes are allowed ... just a list of the moves played.
2. Yes, you can walk around. You can even look from your opponent's point of view. Talking, really is the big no no.
You shouldn't talk to your opponent (distraction). You also shouldn't talk to anyone else. It seems as though you are getting help (even if you are not and the person doesn't even play chess. 🙂 )
3. If you touch a piece and it has a legal move, you must move it.

and in tournaments GMs use monrois, which is a 360 dollar thing thats like a stripped down palm pilot to write moves on. its the only official ones so the monopoly is why theyre so pricy

Call it a "game" instead of a "match" if you want to sound in-the-know. A match is usually a series of games between two players.
