A quest of Chess etiquette… when to resign?

I am fairly new to the site, so I’d like to poll the general population on a few areas of online chess etiquette.

The facts: I have 2 games vs. “a1defiant” … game numbers 793642 and 793641. I am no expert player but I feel I have these games well in hand and I mean well in hand.

The questions:
1.Do people prolong these games in the virtual world hoping for a win on time a time default?
2.Is cyber chess so antiseptic that a player will go through the motions in a hopeless position because there is no one sitting across the board with a smug look on his face mocking you?
3.Is the an accepted or practiced etiquette on when to resign?

1. I suppose some people probably do. Some people just like to play out their games. More often, people will want to play a game out hoping for a blunder which salvages half a point (or even more...).
2. As above, some people like to play out their games.
3. No. Certainly not here.

There are some threads on this topic. Somebody (sorry, I can't remember who it was) gave a rule of thumb that might be worth considering. If you are playing somebody who is rated 300 or more points above you, figure that they are not going to miss a forced checkmate of your king that you have been able to see, and resign. Otherwise, play on, hoping that they miss it, or that you can get a stalemate.

One player--again, I can't think of who it is--has written in his profile that he intends to never be checkmated. That makes me wonder if he could have picked up a win or a draw here by playing on against an opponent who would not have seen the checkmate.

I resign fairly rarely, even against higher players. My main reason is that I try to learn something by watching exactly HOW they go about turning a winning position into an actual win, ie checkmate.

Personally I would have probably resigned these games by now (certainly the one where there's only a king left!), but yes, some people really do prefer to play to the end.

Unless you worry about your rating resign against him citing overwhelming boredom - otherwise it's good endgame practice for you.

Another fact is that some people on here play for the MAP. That means they will play untill mate in every game, to get the most moves out of the game.

but not when it's a move a week 🙁

At a guess, I'd say they're more hoping for a blunder than a timeout.

2. Is cyber chess so antiseptic that a player will go through the motions in a hopeless position because there is no one sitting across the board with a smug look on his face mocking you?

Possibly, although most people I've played against have resigned in a hopeless position, and I'll always resign when I see the end coming (although I often don't see the end coming - I'm not very good at chess after all).

3. Is the an accepted or practiced etiquette on when to resign?

Not as far as I'm aware.

Most players prolong hopeless games because they have found that the game isn't always over just because one player thinks it is. Many chess teachers tell students to never resign. And yes, people frequently blunder away a win in the endgame.

It's not your opponent's job to make the game easy for you. If they drag the game out for weeks in a hopeless position then we have no choice except to play it out and win the game.

You should resign when the position and the play of your opponent leaves no doubt about the final outcome.

I resign when I can beat Kasparov from my opponent's position.

Ok, a few things regarding this issue:

If you are playing, say a 1200 rated player, and you are 1800, and you don't treat the game very seriously and blunder a minor peice early, I don't think it's a good idea to simply resign. Make the 1200 rater earn those 62 pts a game, god darnit! LOL! You are the better player, so just think of it as some handicap and play on.

Another reason not to resign is that although you are down several peices of material, the possibility to make the game tactical, trap like, and complicated exists. Do this, don't resign, and your opponent may underestimate you and you might take advantage of a blunder. One game, I was down two entire minor peices, but then I set like 5 traps in a row, a possibility in the position which is why I didn't resign quite yet, and one of those traps worked and I got the queen for a knight! Now, of course, my opponent didn't do the mistake of resigning at this point, I got the queen, but he has 3 minor peices, I may be up two pawns and mathematicly winning, but he has 3 entire minor peices for the queen that will still make this game very tough for me to win, or even draw, I could still very well lose anyways.

Another practical reason not to resign, maybe they are simply LOUSY ENDGAME PLAYERS. You won't beleive how many games I drew or even won when down a pawn or even TWO, because my opponents couldn't figure out how to win, what I thought of, the most elemantary, logical, and practical endgames. It seems any player below 2000, his/her endgame thoery leaves much to be desired, it'a really quite unbeleivable, Silman was right in this regard, and it's one of the only things I agree with him.

Dunno, where you got this from, but the most rating points gained/lost in any game on here is 32.

The only real reason to resign a game on here, is that if you don't and go on to win it, then you will be blacklisted forever on Gambitzoid's list of Unsportsmanlike players. If you're not too bothered about that, then play on until you get pished off with struggling.

I would give one reason to resign on this site, anyway: if you have a large number of games going, your time allocation can be a factor. If you are spending a large block of time thinking about moves in a game that you are almost certain to lose, you are probably taking thinking time away from games you have winning prospects in. Most people playing on this site have a limited amount of time to spend here so I think it's a real factor. If you have two games going against a strong player do you really want to spend half of your time available thinking about the game you will almost certainly lose anyway? I resign games when I feel that if I was in the other chair I'd know I was going to win.
