A Sicilian Svesh... Kalashnik.... Lowent.... OK which one is it?

Only Chess

Greetings players and fellow patzers! 🙂

Got just the one game to share, which I played OTB yesterday in a county game.
It was Harrogate 'A' vs Doncaster in the Yorkshire Woodhouse Cup, which I captained the Away team.

After years of playing the Open game (1.e4 e5) as Black,
I have recently started to revisit the Sicilian, playing some games here on RHP.

Of the seemingly hundreds of Sicilian variations available, I'm quite fond of those which involve an e5 push,
which admittedly could come from my history of playing 1.e4 e5.
Yes, sometimes Black gets a backwards d-pawn, but there's plenty of dynamic play to be had!

Question:
My opening knowledge is famously bad, so in this particular game I'm about to show,
please can someone tell me what variation it actually is??

I've also added some notes, showing my thoughts during the game, like old times!

Brian Coop (1953) vs Zak Tomlinson (1829)

Time controls were 110mins + 10sec increment

This is the only OTB Sicilian I've played in the last couple years,
yet it's ended up being one of my better games, with a 97% accuracy score according to da fish...

...Or to paraphrase the Godfather:
"It's a Sicilian message. It means the player with the White pieces sleeps with the fishes."

@64squaresofpain

Sveshnikov Sicilian and you're supposed to put your white knight on b5 and not take the knight at c6.

Anyways, the e5 push is the Sveshnikov Sicilian.

If you played Nb5 it would have been the Kalashnikov Sicilian (and if Black had played Nf6 at some point it would have then probably transposed into a Sveshnikov).
My database says after Nxc6 it is "Sicilian, Unusual Lines", so I guess there is no name.

Also the Najdorf...and possibly others.

"The Najdorf Variation is Black's most popular system in the Sicilian Defence. Najdorf's intention with 5...a6 was to prepare ...e5 on the next move to gain space in the centre." - Wikipedia

Good Game Yes a Sveshnikov.
Not sure I would have gone for that f2 pawn with 18...Bh4.
It activated White, they should have played Rf1 instead of Qe6.

White can have some fun with 19.Qe3 d4 20 Bxd4 exd4 21.Nxd4.

Think I would have played 18.c5 with Rb6 and Rh6 ideas.

Yes the Sicilian is good but you were lucky your opponent played an Open variation
with an early d4. The trend is to play closed Sicilians or 2 c3. Lazy White's then only
have to book up on one line instead of all the many Sicilian variations.

Sveshnikov it is! .. cheers all 🙂

And GP - yes, when I have White vs the Sicilian, I am one of those lazy players that plays 2.c3,
so am fully aware of this possibility and therefore have a good idea of what to play against it!

Nice to hear from you Zak.
Unfortunately,it's really awkward for me to play through games since the latest update here. The board and the buttons don't fit on my chromebook screen anymore so to see the comments I lose half the board.Progress!

I wouldn't mind a smaller board. The problem is the board is too big and I can't make it smaller on posts of this type.

Hiya Dave, hope you're keeping well bud.

The board size can be changed, both in-game and in the forums, have you seen this?

Next to the board you should see a little cogwheel icon, hit that and it brings up board settings,
there's a slider where you can change the board size... will that fix your problem at all?

I'll be honest on mobile the new UI isn't ideal for forum browsing, particularly going through games analysis,
but on PC I've got a large monitor which means I don't have such issues.

Also @RooksandHooks - afraid I can't play IOW as it clashes with a local tournament to me.

My next OTB tourney will be the Shropshire congress in early January (9th-11th)

Eyup Zak
I've tried all that.It doesn't make any difference to Geoff's blogs.
I've also tried getting a screenshot to send to Russ but I don't seem to be having much success. All I can get on the clipboard from the blog is the bloke pinning up the notice!
It's not really important.
We're going up to see my granddaughter soon so she'll probably be able to help
She's 9 years old!
