The scholastic chess club I coach is co-ed, and we have about the same number of girls as we do boys (slightly more boys, but still not worse than 60/40). Most of the scholastic tournaments are also co-ed. There is one tournament every year in our region that separates them (Queen's Quest with Knights on the Side).

I agree..it would be braver to just compete with the men. Women tend to be less monomaniac.. which is a character flaw that a good chess player must have.. and this is the cause there are less female GMs, not because women are less intelligent or logical.

At the Mexican tourney there was an interview with one of the very strong women players, forget her name but her view is that women simply don't have the physical stamina for demanding grandmaster games as good as men, so should play better at blitz, but that is my take on it, the blitz thing.
